Taping and Bracing

What Is Taping and Bracing?

This is when tape is applied to a part of the body in a specific way in order to either stabilise an injured joint or facilitate the action of a muscle. For example, strong tape might be applied to an ankle after a sprain to help support the healing ligament and to prevent further damage. Kinesio-tape, which is stretchy, might be applied over a weak or tight muscle in order to help it function optimally. Taping is a very useful addition to any treatment program to provide support and comfort to the injured area and enable you to safely progress with your exercise program.

What Should I Expect?

Once applied, most tape jobs will remain in place for 3-4 days before it begins to lose some of its effectiveness. The stronger, bracing tape will feel very supportive around a joint and give it a feeling of stability. The stretchier Kinesio-tape won’t feel as tight and won’t restrict your movement in the same way, but it will work in such a way as to help the muscles and joints move in as an efficient way as possible.

Will It Hurt?

Having tape applied doesn’t hurt. The only time it may hurt is when it is being taken off, especially if there is body hair on the area in question!
