How A Footscan Can Prevent And Treat Overuse Injuries

How a Foot Scan and 3D-Printed Orthotics Can Prevent and Treat Common Running Injuries

Running is a fantastic way to stay fit, but it also comes with a risk of overuse injuries. Repetitive stress, poor biomechanics, and improper foot alignment can lead to conditions like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, runner’s knee, and runner’s hip.

At The Physiotherapy Place, we use gait and motion foot scanning technology to assess how your feet function while running. This advanced tool allows us to pinpoint imbalances and inefficiencies that may be contributing to pain or injury. With this data, we can prescribe custom 3D-printed orthotics, designed to optimise foot mechanics, improve alignment, and reduce stress on the lower limbs.

The Link Between Foot Mechanics and Running Injuries

Your feet are the foundation of your movement. If they are not functioning correctly, it can cause a chain reaction of compensations and stress throughout the body. Even small imbalances in how your foot strikes the ground or absorbs impact can lead to significant injuries over time.

A gait and motion foot scan helps identify:

- Overpronation or supination – Poor foot posture can lead to instability, increasing strain on the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon, knees, and hips.

- Arch issues – High or flat arches can alter the body’s natural shock absorption, leading to excessive stress on muscles and joints.

- Weight distribution imbalances – Uneven loading can cause overuse of certain muscles, leading to chronic pain and inflammation.

- Faulty biomechanics – Abnormal walking or running patterns can contribute to injuries and inefficiencies in movement.

By addressing these issues early, we can reduce the risk of injury and improve performance.

How 3D-Printed Orthotics Help Prevent and Treat Running Injuries

Unlike generic insoles, 3D-printed orthotics are custom-made based on the precise data from your foot scan. They provide targeted support and correction, addressing the specific biomechanical issues contributing to your pain.

Common Running Injuries That Can Be Prevented and Treated with 3D-Printed Orthotics

1. Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Pain)

• Caused by excessive strain on the plantar fascia due to poor arch support or improper foot mechanics.

• How orthotics help: Custom arch support reduces tension on the fascia, alleviating pain and preventing re-injury.

2. Achilles Tendinitis (Heel & Lower Calf Pain)

• Often due to excessive strain on the Achilles tendon from overpronation or improper foot strike.

• How orthotics help: Corrects foot positioning to reduce strain on the Achilles tendon and improve shock absorption.

3. Runner’s Knee (Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome)

• Caused by misalignment of the knee joint due to faulty foot mechanics.

• How orthotics help: Improves foot posture, stabilises the knee, and reduces stress on the patella.

4. Runner’s Hip (IT Band Syndrome, Hip Pain)

• Often results from poor foot and lower limb alignment, leading to excessive strain on the hips and IT band.

• How orthotics help: Corrects biomechanical imbalances to ensure even weight distribution and reduce stress on the hips.

Long-Term Benefits of Foot Scan Assessments & 3D-Printed Orthotics

• Injury prevention – Addressing biomechanical issues before they become painful injuries.

• Enhanced performance – More efficient movement patterns mean less wasted energy and improved endurance.

• Faster recovery – By reducing strain on injured areas, orthotics help speed up the healing process.

• Better comfort – Custom-fit orthotics provide long-term comfort and support for running and daily activities.
