Sports Massage & Massage Therapy

What Is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is the application of massage techniques to athletes, used to help them prepare for and recover from training and competing. It can be used to address injury problems, improve functional flexibility and range of motion and reduce recovery times between training.

However it is not just for athletes. The techniques used in sports massage treat the soft tissues of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia), which everyone has so everyone can benefit from its effects.

What Is Soft Tissue Therapy?

Soft tissue therapy is the assessment, treatment and management of soft tissue injury, pain and dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system. It looks to address the whole body system, identifying and treating causes of pain and dysfunction and not just treating the symptoms. It can redress imbalances caused by everyday activities, such as sitting at a computer all day, allowing a greater freedom of movement and a consequent reduction in chronic pain. It can also be used to ease some of the symptoms of medical conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes and Cystic Fibrosis.

Do You Use Different Massage Techniques?

Yes there are several different massage techniques that we can use depending on your injury and what we are trying to achieve.

  • sports massage - to release muscles improve movement

  • remedial massage - slightly more gentle, this might be used on a more tender area

  • effleurage - used to flush swelling towards the lymphatic nodes to be reabsorbed

  • deep transverse friction massage - reduce scar tissue and increase blood flow in tendons and ligaments

What Should I Expect?

At your first massage therapy appointment you can expect a thorough assessment to identify all of the problem areas that require treatment. You will also have a full massage treatment tailored to your specific needs. Hopefully you will begin to feel the benefits immediately.

Will It Hurt?

Sports massage does not have to be painful. A range of techniques can be used, and at a level of pressure that is appropriate to you, in order to achieve the best results.

How Many Sessions Will I Need And How Much Will It Cost?

Sometimes sports massage will be included as part of your physio session if your injury requires it. If it is specifically massage therapy that you are booking in for then we offer a range of treatment times and prices. We also offer discounts on block bookings if we think that you will benefit from a few sessions over a period of time. Prices can be found here.
