Massage Therapy At The Physiotherapy Place

October 2, 2019 Fiona McGregor
Edinburgh sports massage

We are delighted to now offer Massage Therapy as a service at The Physiotherapy Place. Welcome to the team Vanessa Skelton! Vanessa is a BTEC Level 5 (equivalent to degree level) therapist offering sports and remedial massage and soft tissue therapy for the treatment of chronic pain and soft tissue injuries. Vanessa also offers oncology massage for those living with cancer; and pregnancy and post-natal massages.

Vanessa uses a range of traditional massage and soft tissue techniques such as trigger points, soft tissue release, assisted stretching, myofascial dry cupping, IASTM and gentle mobilisations to effect a change in the tissue to release tension, increase mobility and reduce pain.

What Is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is the application of massage techniques to athletes, used to help them prepare for and recover from training and competing. It can be used to address injury problems, improve functional flexibility and range of motion and reduce recovery times between training.

However it is not just for athletes. The techniques used in sports massage treat the soft tissues of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia), which everyone has so everyone can benefit from its effects.

What Is Soft Tissue Therapy

Soft tissue therapy is the assessment, treatment and management of soft tissue injury, pain and dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system. It looks to address the whole body system, identifying and treating causes of pain and dysfunction and not just treating the symptoms. It can redress imbalances caused by everyday activities, such as sitting at a computer all day, allowing a greater freedom of movement and a consequent reduction in chronic pain. It can also be used to ease some of the symptoms of medical conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes and Cystic Fibrosis.

What Should I Expect

At your first session you can expect a thorough assessment to identify all of the problem areas that require treatment. You will also have a full massage treatment tailored to your specific needs. Hopefully you will begin to feel the benefits immediately.

Will It Hurt?

Sports massage does not have to be painful. A range of techniques can be used, and at a level of pressure that is appropriate to you, in order to achieve the best results.

How Many Sessions Will I Need And How Much Will It Cost?

Vanessa will be able to guide you as to how many sessions she thinks will be most beneficial to you. We offer a range of duration of massage and also do discounts on block bookings if we think that you will benefit from a few sessions over a period of time. Prices can be found here.

Testimonials and Reviews

“I presented several issues for Vanessa. She kept me running throughout a 7 marathons in 7 days challenge and resolved a plantar fasciitis issue within a few visits. Very knowledgeable and very good. ”

“I saw Vanessa for the first time today. I have to say I was giddy when I left. I felt so much better than when I arrived at her office. It was incredible! I highly recommend Vanessa. A skilled professional through and through. You and your body will be glad you booked an appointment with her. ”

— Megan on Facebook

“I’ve only recently found Vanessa and am hugely impressed, not only by her professionalism but also by her technique. I am recovering from surgery and not only has Vanessa helped with that, she’s also helping me with some long standing issues too.

I cannot recommend Vanessa highly enough. Anyone looking for an excellent sports massage or soft tissue therapist, look no further. ”
